To Treasury Functions

A working plan for the move into money market, fixed income and derivatives product development — built around what Bangladesh Bank actually permits today, and what it is about to permit next. Tick things off; progress saves automatically.

The runway

You join on a Sunday — the first working day of both the month and the week, which is as clean a start as the calendar offers. Eight study blocks stand between today and that morning, not four. That changes the plan: go deeper, and run it alongside your notice period rather than cramming it.

today working day weekend — your long study days first day on the desk

Eight blocks to 1 November

Anchored to the Bangladesh week, Sunday to Saturday. Tap a block to jump to its checklist.

How to spend it, realistically

You are working a notice period, so treat the weekday evenings and the Friday–Saturday pairs as two different resources. Evenings are for reading — one chapter, one circular, one concept. The weekends are for building: the curve, the models, the product paper. Nothing on the list needs a full weekday, and anything that does has been mis-scoped.

Mark your own public holidays on this before you plan around it. Several fall inside this window and they are your best uninterrupted blocks.

Where you stand

Progress by workstream, and a self-assessment of the twelve capabilities the desk will actually test you on.

CAPABILITY PROFILE — SELF-RATED

Capability self-assessment

Rate honestly on day one, then again at month three, six and twelve. The gap between 2 and 4 on any row below is roughly one focused month of work.

What you are actually being hired for

You are not being hired to quote spot. The bank has people who can do that faster than you can learn to. You are being hired because new products in Bangladesh die somewhere between "good idea on the desk" and "approved by the risk committee and the central bank" — and you have spent a year on the other side of exactly that gate. Your edge is the product programme paper, the regulatory application, the ALCO memo and the client story. Build the dealing skill so you are credible; sell the product-build skill because it is scarce.

Pre-joining sprint

Eight blocks, Sunday to Saturday, ending 31 October. The goal is not to arrive knowing everything — it is to arrive with a working BDT curve of your own, a read of the rulebook nobody else on the floor has read end to end, a finished product paper and a written ninety-day plan.

Do these three regardless of what else slips

1. Read the Foreign Exchange Risk Management Guidelines (December 2024) cover to cover, including Chapter 9. It is your job description, your limit framework and the derivatives rulebook in one document.

2. Rebuild the BDT curve yourself from auction cut-offs, and keep rebuilding it weekly. Nothing else buys credibility on a rates desk faster.

3. Write the ninety-day plan before day one, and take a printed copy to your first meeting with the Treasurer.

The twelve-month arc

Four quarters, each with one thesis and one hard deliverable. The sequencing matters: you cannot get a BDT swap approved before you have shipped a USD FRA, and you cannot ship an FRA before the desk trusts your pricing.

Beyond year one

Derivatives product map

Everything a Bangladeshi bank treasury can plausibly offer, sorted by how far it is from the regulatory gate. Green is live and mostly under-exploited. Amber needs a case-by-case application to Bangladesh Bank. Clay needs the rules themselves to move.

ProductCurrencyGateRegulatory basis and constraint
The one that matters most

In April 2026 Bangladesh Bank began publishing BOFR — a secured, transaction-based overnight rate built from interbank repo on its own market infrastructure — alongside DOMMR for unsecured money. That is the missing ingredient for a BDT interest rate derivatives market. Every developed swap market rests on a credible overnight index; Bangladesh now has one for the first time.

The strategic play for your first year is not to trade a BDT swap. It is to make your bank the institution that does the work to make one possible: a BOFR compounding convention, a term structure methodology, a valuation and fixing framework, a draft product programme, and a netting-enforceability opinion. Present that to Bangladesh Bank's Foreign Exchange Policy Department and Debt Management Department as a package. Regulators move on concrete, well-documented proposals from credible banks, not on requests.

Constraints to design around

Regulatory knowledge base

Bangladesh-specific, tiered by how often you will actually reach for it. Tier one and two are read-once-properly. Tier three is a weekly habit. Work down the list and tick as you go.

Build the habit, not the archive

Set a standing thirty minutes every Sunday for the week's circulars across FEPD, DMD, BRPD, DOS, MPD and FRTMD. Log every one that touches treasury in a single running sheet with four columns: date, department and number, what changed, and what it means for the desk. Within six months that sheet is the most valuable document in the treasury, and it is the thing that gets you invited to the ALCO.

Market state — your starting brief

What the BDT market looks like as you walk in. Verify every number against source on day one; these are anchors, not quotes.

Reading list

Ordered by return on the hour, not by prestige, and free of any exam or fee. The books are worth buying but every one of them has a free substitute below; the open sources group alone covers the ground a dealing certification would, at no cost.

Milestones

What "on track" looks like at each checkpoint. If a checkpoint arrives and most of its line items are open, the problem is usually sequencing, not effort.

Running notes

Trade ideas, circular changes, names to meet, things that surprised you. Saved with the rest of your progress.
